The Totowa, New Jersey community is mourning the loss of Todd Mitchell, a respected law enforcement veteran, school resource officer, emergency medical technician, and security professional whose life was defined by an unwavering commitment to protecting and serving others. Mitchell passed away on June 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and public service that touched countless lives throughout Passaic County and beyond.

For more than three decades, Todd devoted himself to safeguarding his community. His distinguished career began with the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department, where he served for over 25 years in a variety of roles that demanded professionalism, courage, and integrity. During his tenure, he worked within the Passaic County Superior Courts, helping ensure the safety of judges, court personnel, and visitors. He also spent a decade assigned to the Passaic County Jail, overseeing inmate security, transportation operations, intake procedures, and institutional safety.

Later, as a Corporal in the Patrol Division, Mitchell supervised officers, patrolled county properties, and assisted municipalities throughout Passaic County. Fellow officers respected him for his calm leadership, sound judgment, and ability to handle challenging situations with professionalism and composure.

In addition to his law enforcement service, Mitchell dedicated 18 years as a New Jersey State Certified Emergency Medical Technician. His willingness to respond during emergencies and provide critical care demonstrated his deep commitment to helping others in times of need. Whether wearing a law enforcement uniform or responding as an EMT, he consistently placed service above self.

Following his retirement from the Sheriff’s Department, Mitchell continued his mission through school safety. He served as a School Resource Officer and security professional with the Paterson Board of Education for more than nine years, working closely with students, teachers, and administrators. Assigned to schools including Kennedy High School, Roberto Clemente Middle School, and School 12, he became a trusted and familiar presence who helped create safe learning environments while building positive relationships with young people.

Most recently, Mitchell served as a School Resource Officer and School Safety Specialist for the Totowa Board of Education. His expertise in school security, emergency preparedness, and student safety earned the respect and admiration of educators and families alike. At the same time, he worked as a Federal Security Officer protecting Department of Homeland Security facilities, further extending his service to the nation.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mitchell was known for his discipline and dedication to personal growth. A second-degree black belt in Okinawan Shorin Ryu Shidokan Karate, he embodied the values of respect, perseverance, and leadership. He also earned numerous certifications that reflected his commitment to continual learning and excellence.

As family, friends, colleagues, students, and community members mourn his passing, they remember a man who dedicated his life to making others safer. Todd Mitchell’s legacy is one of honor, service, and compassion. His influence will continue to be felt through the countless individuals whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable career.
